Job Evaluation in Evenpay

Job evaluation is the process of systematically scoring each position against a set of structured criteria — knowledge requirements, problem-solving complexity, responsibility, and working conditions — so that grade assignments reflect the actual demands of the work rather than job titles or seniority assumptions alone.

In Evenpay, this is done through Position Evaluation. Navigate there via Positions → Position Evaluation.

Why Job Evaluation Matters

Under the EU Pay Transparency Directive, employers must be able to demonstrate that their pay structures are based on neutral, objective criteria. Job evaluation is the mechanism that makes this possible — it produces a documented, auditable score for each position that justifies its grade placement.

Without evaluated grades, equal-value comparisons rest on assumptions. With them, you can show exactly why two roles are — or aren't — considered work of equal value.

The Position Evaluation List

The Positions tab lists all positions in your organisation and their current evaluation status. Columns show each position's LevelFamilyStatus, and scores across the evaluation dimensions, which you have selected in your Evaluation Framework, such as: KnowledgeMental & Problem-solvingResponsibilityWorking Conditions, and a Total score.

Positions that have not yet been evaluated show a Not evaluated status badge. Click the ▷ play button on the right side of any row to start an evaluation for that specific position.

Running an Evaluation

When you start an evaluation, Evenpay opens a step-by-step wizard that guides you through each dimension and its questions. For each question you select a rating that best describes the demands of the position — not the performance of the person currently in it.

Evaluation dimensions

The default evaluation framework covers four dimensions, each contributing equally to the total score:

Dimension

What it assesses

Knowledge & Skills

The technical knowledge, expertise, and skills required to perform the role effectively

Mental & Problem-solving

The complexity of thinking, analytical demands, and problem-solving required by the role

Responsibility & Impact

The scope of accountability, decision-making authority, and impact on the organisation

Working Conditions

The physical, environmental, or situational demands associated with the role

How questions work

Each dimension contains one or more questions answered on a rating scale. Questions are displayed with a clear description of what is being assessed, and each point on the scale has a descriptive label to help calibrate answers consistently. For example, a Knowledge question might use a 1–5 scale where:

  • 1 — Limited: Lacks required technical knowledge; struggles to apply concepts and frequently needs support.
  • 2 — Basic: Has foundational knowledge but applies it inconsistently; requires regular guidance.
  • 3 — Proficient: Demonstrates solid knowledge and applies it effectively in most situations with minimal support.
  • 4 — Advanced: Shows deep expertise, applies knowledge confidently to complex problems, and supports others.
  • 5 — Expert: Recognised authority; consistently applies exceptional expertise and drives best practices.

When Display as text options is enabled on a question, the scale labels appear as selectable buttons rather than a numeric slider — making it easier to choose a response without referring back to a legend.

The evaluation score

Once all questions are answered, Evenpay calculates a total evaluation score (0–100). This score is compared against the score ranges defined for each grade in your level framework. If a position's score falls within a grade's range, Evenpay confirms the current grade assignment. If it falls outside, Evenpay flags this and may suggest a reclassification depending on your framework's Job Level Calculation setting (Suggestion or Forced).

The score and dimension breakdown are then visible in the Position Evaluation list and on the individual position record under the Position Evaluation section.

If you are going to evaluate multiple positions one by one, make sure you have clicked the "Continue to the next position after saving" on the bottom left corner.

The Evaluation Matrix

Click the Evaluation Matrix tab to see a grid view of all evaluated positions mapped across grades and career paths. This gives you a visual overview of how your positions are distributed across the grade structure — useful for spotting clusters, gaps, or outliers at a glance.

Configuring the Evaluation Framework

The dimensions, questions, rating scales, and grade-to-score mappings are all configured in Settings → Evaluation Framework. From there you can:

  • Adjust the weight of each dimension
  • Edit question text and scale labels
  • Define evaluation rules that translate scores into grade or level outcomes
  • Set up selection rules to automatically apply the right framework to different position types
  • Configure whether the framework operates in Suggestion or Forced mode

Evenpay includes a ready-made default framework to get you started. See Evaluation Framework in the Settings section for a full walkthrough of the configuration options.
